Lexis Nexis publishes legal texts for law students and practitioners. Over the last year we have redesigned two series of books for them. The Academic Edition, and the Student Companion series .
For the Academic Edition series we had to create a design which could work across all 9 titles in the series. We took the opportunity to depart from the traditional look of legal texts, in favour of something contemporary and stylish. A dusty colour palatte, combined with pattern based photography unifies the titles. The imagery on each cover is abstractly linked to the subject matter. Creating an original classy set of book covers, which have been a great success.
The Student Companions are aimed at a younger entry level audience. While the Academic Edition is serious and classy, this series is more personable and fun. The existing covers were based a round a series of cartoons, which the publisher wanted to reuse. Initially this posed a problem as the images were of low quality and their styles were inconsistent. However once we looked at the problem as the key to the solution the covers came together. Based around pulp fiction, the covers are distressed to look as if they?ve been sitting in someone?s back pocket. Making them funky and accessible. According to the publisher these covers have been a real hit.
